What is a money story?

A money story is your personal narrative about money. It started forming in early childhood and makes up your beliefs, thoughts, and feelings about money which in turn affects your financial behaviors. It is as unique as you are. It includes all of the historical facts of your financial life: The emotional wounds and triumphs. The tough conversations. The beliefs and habits inherited from your parents, your upbringing, the ways you adopted them, and the ways you rebelled against or even transcended them.

Why does knowing your money story matter?

Nobody chooses their money story, just like you don't choose your childhood. But you still have one. Whether you know it or not, your money story is driving certain financial decisions: where to live, how much mortgage you can take on, what you eat, drive, where you vacation, what kind of clothes you buy, what type of job you take. It affects basically every choice you make in life. If you don't know your money story, you can't own it, can't change it and you won't evolve your relationship with money.
